In the modern era, English is the primary language for medical research, international conferences, and global health protocols. For non-native English-speaking HCPs, English is no longer just a "foreign language" but a critical professional tool. While technical medical knowledge is universal, the ability to communicate that knowledge in English—whether to a foreign patient, in a peer-reviewed journal, or at an international summit—remains a significant barrier for many HCPs. Miscommunication in a clinical setting can lead to diagnostic errors and reduced quality of care.
To identify the specific linguistic challenges (speaking, listening, writing, or reading) HCPs face in clinical settings. To evaluate the correlation between English proficiency and professional confidence. To assess the need for tailored "English for Medical Purposes" (EMP) training programs.
A mixed-methods research design is recommended to capture both statistical trends and in-depth personal experiences. A. Quantitative Phase (The Survey) Participants: A diverse group of HCPs (Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, and Residents) from various departments. Tool: A structured online questionnaire using a 5-point Likert scale. Data Points: Self-reported proficiency levels, frequency of English use in research vs. clinical practice, and perceived barriers to communication. B. Qualitative Phase (The Interviews) Participants: A smaller subset of 10–15 HCPs for semi-structured interviews. Focus: Detailed accounts of "near-miss" incidents due to language barriers and the emotional impact of struggling to communicate in a professional environment. C. Data Analysis Quantitative: Statistical analysis using software like SPSS or R to find correlations between years of experience and English confidence. Qualitative: Thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns in the interview transcripts.
